A Guide to Common Physical Therapy Treatments

When you’re recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain, or working to improve mobility, physical therapy can be a game-changer. At Advanced Care Physical Therapy, our licensed therapists use proven techniques backed by research and hands-on experience to help you feel and move better. Every treatment plan is personalized, but most include a mix of therapeutic exercises, manual therapy, specialized modalities, and education to support long-term results.

Therapeutic Exercise

Exercise is the foundation of most physical therapy programs. The correct movements, performed with proper technique, can restore strength, flexibility, and balance while helping you avoid future injuries. Your therapist may recommend:

  • Range of Motion (ROM) Exercises to restore joint movement after injury or surgery.
  • Strengthening Exercises that build muscle power and endurance to support injured areas.
  • Balance and Proprioception Training to improve stability and reduce fall risk.
  • Gait Training to correct walking patterns and improve mobility.

These exercises are always tailored to your condition, fitness level, and goals.

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy involves skilled, hands-on techniques designed to reduce pain, improve mobility, and encourage healing. Depending on your needs, this may include:

  • Joint Mobilization with gentle, controlled movements to restore joint function.
  • Soft Tissue Mobilization, such as targeted massage and stretching, is used to release tight muscles.
  • Manipulation using quick, precise motions to improve joint alignment and mobility.

By addressing restrictions directly, manual therapy can often speed up recovery and improve overall comfort.

Modalities

Sometimes your body needs an extra assist to calm inflammation, stimulate healing, or relieve pain. Physical therapists may use:

  • Ultrasound Therapy delivers sound waves that gently heat tissues and promote recovery.
  • Electrical Stimulation to activate muscles, improve circulation, and reduce discomfort.
  • Heat and Cold Therapy for targeted pain relief and inflammation control.
  • Solo Step Balance System available at our Dent Tower location. This specialized harness-and-track system allows patients to practice walking, balance, and mobility exercises without the risk of falling. It helps eliminate fear, boosts confidence, and provides a safe way to challenge yourself during rehab. Many patients find that Solo Step speeds up progress by letting them focus on movement rather than worrying about stability.

Education and Support

A big part of physical therapy is learning how to protect your progress. We’ll guide you on proper posture, lifting techniques, and daily movement strategies. If needed, we’ll also help you learn to use assistive devices like canes, walkers, or braces, and give you a home exercise program to keep your recovery going between visits.

Conditions We Treat

Physical therapy can benefit people with a wide range of needs, including:

  • Musculoskeletal Injuries, such as sprains, strains, fractures, and joint pain.
  • Neurological Conditions such as stroke recovery, Parkinson’s disease, or spinal cord injury.
  • Post-Surgical Rehabilitation after joint replacement or orthopedic surgery.
  • Chronic pain, including back pain, arthritis, and fibromyalgia.
  • Sports Injuries with a focus on prevention, treatment, and safe return to activity.
  • Pelvic Floor Dysfunction to address urinary incontinence and other pelvic health concerns.
