How a Physical Therapist Can Ease Your Occipital Neuralgia Pain

Have you ever experienced a sharp, throbbing pain at the back of your head or neck?

This could be occipital neuralgia.

Occipital neuralgia affects the occipital nerves, which run from the top of the spinal cord up through the scalp. These nerves carry signals from your brain to your scalp. Something irritating them—something such as muscle tension or inflammation—causes pain.

The role of physical therapy

Physical therapists are like detectives for the body. They find clues to what's causing pain and figure out how to fix it.

In the case of occipital neuralgia, a physical therapist can help by doing the following:

  • Easing muscle tension

Often the culprit is tight muscles in your neck and back. A physical therapist can teach you exercises to stretch and relax these muscles.

  • Improving posture

Bad posture can put extra stress on the occipital nerves. Your physical therapist will show you how to sit, stand, and move in ways that reduce this stress.

  • Applying hands-on pressure

Physical therapists use hands-on techniques such as massage or the application of gentle pressure to relieve occipital neuralgia pain.

Real-life success story

Emily, a 35-year-old teacher, suffered from intense headaches, especially after long days at work. Her physical therapist discovered her pain was from occipital neuralgia and, together, they worked on exercising her neck and improving her posture. After a few weeks, Emily was getting fewer headaches and once again enjoying her work and personal life.
