Mechanical traction, a term commonly shortened to simply “traction,” is decompression of the spine and muscles that’s designed to ease neck or back pressure–and, by extension, pain. It does so by gently stretching the space between the vertebrae.
When the sciatic nerve–the body’s biggest–gets pinched, the resulting low-back pain, ache, or discomfort can radiate all the way down the legs to the feet. Mechanical traction provides relief.
Also known as axial spondylarthritis, this is inflammatory arthritis of the spine, which usually is diagnosed in early adulthood, causes stiffness and reduced mobility.
