A stress fracture is a small crack in a bone, such as that caused by repetitive trauma. Common in distance runners, stress injuries can affect the shin, foot, hip, back, and heel. Stress fractures can also develop in bones weakened by osteoporosis. Treatment usually involves physical therapy, rest, and adjustments in activity to prevent further injury.
