A ligament is a tough band of tissue holding together and stabilizing a joint. The four ligaments of the knee most often damaged are the anterior cruciate, posterior cruciate, medial collateral, and lateral collateral. A sprain is a stretched or torn ligament. Though the most common location for a sprain is the ankle, the knee, too, is at risk for such an injury.
