De Quervain tenosynovitis affects two ropey tendons in the lower arm. The tendons swell, often from overuse, arthritis, injury, or fluid retention, and begin rubbing against the tunnel carrying them between the wrist and thumb. This causes pain near the base of the thumb. Repetitive hand motions worsen the condition. Treatment usually succeeds if prompt.
