How Seed Oils Can Help with Inflammation And Why That Matters for Your Physical Therapy Journey

Inflammation can be a real roadblock during physical therapy. It slows healing, causes discomfort, and makes it tough to get the most out of your sessions. While physical therapy techniques are key to your recovery, what you put in your body matters too. One simple way to support your body from the inside out? Incorporate more anti-inflammatory seed oils into your diet.

Let’s break it down.

What Are Seed Oils?

Seed oils are oils extracted from the seeds of plants. Some of the most common include:

  • Flaxseed oil
  • Chia seed oil
  • Hemp seed oil
  • Pumpkin seed oil
  • Sunflower seed oil (high oleic)

These aren’t the heavily processed seed oils often flagged for concerns (like soybean or corn oil). We're talking about cold-pressed, minimally processed oils rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin E—all nutrients known to reduce inflammation naturally.

How They Help with Inflammation

Certain seed oils are packed with alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3. Your body can convert ALA into EPA and DHA, the same inflammation-fighting fatty acids found in fish. These compounds help:

  • Lower pro-inflammatory markers
  • Improve circulation
  • Protect joints and tissues
  • Support immune response

That means less stiffness, less pain, and better mobility—all crucial when you're rehabbing an injury or trying to regain strength.

Why It Matters for Physical Therapy

Reducing inflammation makes your physical therapy sessions more effective. When swelling and discomfort go down, your body can:

  • Move more freely
  • Tolerate higher levels of exercise
  • Recover faster between sessions
  • Stay on track without frustrating setbacks

Plus, patients who support their healing process nutritionally often report better energy levels and a more positive mindset—which goes a long way when you're doing the work to get back to 100%.

Small Changes, Big Results

If you're looking to add seed oils to your routine, start simple:

  • Add a spoonful of flaxseed or chia oil to a smoothie
  • Use pumpkin seed oil as a salad dressing
  • Drizzle hemp oil over veggies or grain bowls

Always check with your doctor or nutritionist, especially if you're on medication or have dietary restrictions.
