Common Myths About Physical Therapy Debunked

Physical therapy is a powerful tool for healing, rehabilitation, and improving quality of life, but misconceptions about it can deter people from seeking the help they need.

In this blog post, we explore the myths and facts of physical therapy and provide the information you need to make an informed decision regarding your health and wellness.

Myth 1: I need a referral to see a physical therapist

Many people believe they need a doctor’s referral to see a physical therapist. While this may be true in some cases, most states allow you to schedule an appointment with a physical therapist without a doctor's recommendation.

Myth 2: Physical therapy is painful

One common myth is that physical therapy is painful or uncomfortable. While you might feel some discomfort as you work through exercises, a skilled physical therapist guides you through gentle, tailored treatments, minimizing pain.

The goal of physical therapy is to relieve pain, not cause it. Carefully planned exercises and treatments so alleviated one Advanced Care patient’s severe back pain that she regained her love of dancing!

Myth 3: Physical therapy is only for injuries and accidents

Though physical therapy is widely known for treating injuries and accidents, it offers much more. It can help with chronic conditions, improve mobility, prevent falls, and enhance athletic performance. In other words, it's not just for recovery; it's a proactive approach to maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle.

Myth 4: Physical therapy isn't covered by insurance

Many people think physical therapy is expensive and not covered by insurance. But most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover physical therapy to some extent.

Check with your insurance provider to understand coverage specific to your needs.

Myth 5: I can do physical therapy myself

While it's great to be proactive about your health, physical therapy requires expert guidance.

A physical therapist has the education, skills, and experience to assess your condition and create a personalized treatment plan. Doing physical therapy on your own may lead to incorrect techniques and could do more harm than good.

The truth about physical therapy

Understanding the truth behind physical therapy myths can empower you to take charge of your health and well-being.
