When the upper-arm bone pops out of the shoulder socket, usually in a sudden injury such as a fall, you get chronic shoulder instability; a shoulder that’s been dislocated even once is always thereafter vulnerable to being dislocated again, because the joint’s lining, ligaments, or labrum is damaged or detached. That leaves the joint more likely to pop apart.
